Philosophy

As an educator, I have always believed in a play-based approach, that children's exploration and inquiry are key factors to their development. Therefore, I believe in providing a child-centred environment that respects and includes everyone in the community is essential. Being inclusive gives positive and comfortable reassurance to the children, which in return allows them to freely explore without any fear or distress.
I also believe we have to give our full attention to the child and observe them carefully with care to get to know who they really are and build a relationship with them. This is because I think children can develop their skills based on their interests and absorb knowledge best when we care for them. This is why I agreed with the Montessori approach and the hands-on approach by John Dewey. I like the idea that the educators have to provide an environment that allows the children to explore freely on their interests and earn hands-on experiences. I believe providing a suitable environment and care is a critical responsibility for all educators to have. Considering that every child is unique, and each has their own interest is an essential part of early childhood studies. We have to admit that no children are alike and that their developmental stages may be all different. There may be children who are faster and who are slower. They may have different interests and cultures. I believe incorporating all these differences and proving an environment that best suits the children is what educators should do. Giving all children an equal opportunity and making a culturally appropriate environment is my goal as an educator. Therefore, incorporating the TRC and the ABR within the environment is important.
Moreover, I found the strength-based perspective very relatable. I like how the perspective focused on what the children or family can 'do' or can 'work' rather than focusing on what is 'wrong' with the children and the families (Shimoni and Baxter, 2019). Focusing on their strengths rather than their faults and encouraging them that they can improve, is my new philosophy of teaching.
